The Majestic Citadel of the Bahmani Sultanate
Bidar Fort
Bidar Fort stands as one of the most formidable and architectural grand fortresses in South India, situated atop the red laterite plateau of northern Karnataka. Originally constructed in the 8th century and later grandly rebuilt in 1428 AD by Bahmani Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali, the fort seamlessly blends Persian, Turkish, and indigenous Deccani architectural styles. It is world-renowned for its unique defense system, featuring a massive triple-channeled moat carved directly out of solid bedrock to keep invaders at bay. Spanning over three kilometers in perimeter, the complex houses breathtaking palaces, royal courts, and ancient mosques, including the magnificent Rangeen Mahal with its vibrant tile work and mother-of-pearl inlays. The fort also contains the historic Solah Khamba Mosque, famous for its sixteen massive pillars, alongside the Tarkash Mahal, Gagan Mahal, and Royal Baths. Beyond its military brilliance, Bidar Fort boasts an extraordinary ancient water supply system known as Karez (Qanat), which engineered groundwater distribution using subterranean canals.
